Start with what you noticed

Smoke spill can have several possible causes. Stop use if it persists, record when it happens, and ask for an on-site evaluation of the appliance and vent system.

Odors may relate to deposits, moisture, airflow or another source. Record timing and conditions; a smell alone cannot identify the cause.

A stain near a fireplace or chimney may have several possible sources. Track it safely and ask for a roof-to-interior assessment.

Cracked or open joints, loose brick and surface wear should be evaluated in context. A photo can document change but cannot establish structural safety.

A visible crown crack can be one clue in a broader water-management assessment. Ask a contractor to inspect the crown and adjacent components.

A cap can limit entry of rain and debris when correctly matched to the flue. Confirm compatibility and the condition of the surrounding termination.

Draft can be affected by the appliance, vent, air supply, building pressure and weather. Record the pattern and request system-level evaluation.

Visible deposits can indicate the system needs professional attention, but the firebox view does not reveal the full flue condition.

Sounds, nesting material or an animal in the firebox may call for safe removal and a flue check. Avoid using the appliance or reaching into the opening.

A suspected blockage can create a serious venting concern. Stop appliance use and arrange an appropriate on-site inspection.
