Gather the system details

Identify the appliance and fuel, find the manual, and collect last year's report. List symptoms and changes since the last visit. That context helps a contractor scope a visit and tell you whether to include more than a routine review.

Book before the first cold snap

Seasonal demand can tighten appointment windows. Schedule ahead when practical and ask what date range is realistic. A scheduled sweep does not resolve an urgent safety issue: stop using a system with smoke spillage, a carbon-monoxide alarm or suspected damage and follow emergency guidance.

Keep the outcome

Save dated photos, written findings, invoices and repair information together. Record which appliance and flue were covered so the next visit starts from a clear baseline.

Keep the right safety boundary

This guide is general homeowner education. Standards, permit rules and manufacturer instructions change. Ask a qualified professional to assess the actual chimney, flue and appliance. For an active alarm, suspected fire or possible carbon-monoxide exposure, get outside and contact emergency services.

Read the CSIA homeowner resources or the CPSC carbon-monoxide guidance.
